Canon has some kind of auto-rotate feature embedded in the camera, hence the sideways images that I don't feel like fixing. Sorry about that. At least I found out why. By next post I'll fix it. These were done last night at the Brooklyn Artist's Gym, which is a great space on 7th St. between 2nd and 3rd Ave. The manager there, Rhia, is fantastic and the class was a nice relaxing time. Went with Johnny and hopefully we'll be going more often. They're mostly 30 sec or 1 minute poses, longest one may be 15 minutes or so. Sad you can't really tell which one. Ah well. Keep practicing.

Edison Price

Drawing I did today at Edison Price Lighting in Long Island City at 22nd St. and 42nd Ave. This is a custom machine built in their factory that takes about an 1/8 to a 1/4 inch of aluminum off the outside of a certain size lighting fixture - like the one seen on resting on the bottom of the machine. These guys would figure out what exactly they needed, draw up the plans, build the whole thing and weld it together right there. They're gradually being phased out as computers and computer guided machinery are taking over, but these types of machines are all over the factory floor and they are beautiful. George Closs took me through a lot of Edison Price's history today, more specifically their recent history, and showed me exactly what a lot of these machines do. They have some very exciting contracts finishing up right now and in the works, including the World Trade Center custom lighting.

Kimonos are hard work, and heavy. This drawing is from my own (amateur) photo that I took as Lena was getting done up in a full kimono by a woman who runs a kimono shop in downtown Manhattan. She was doing this at the request of her father's friend, who is going to paint her in a traditional kimono. After I took this picture she went to get professional photos done, and I think her dad and his friend are nice enough to give me one enlargement to paint from. When I get that I'm going to do a painting to show Lena in the full kimono. She looked incredible.

This is a painting I did for my cousin Danny and his wife Phuong (who is now officially my cousin-though I considered her such for a long time now). They got married last month and this is a piece I did for them to celebrate. I couldn't ask for better people to have around. Their cat's names are Yoshimi and Weeman. It's watercolor, gauche, colored pencil, and electrical tape on a 15" x 30" piece of Stonehenge paper.

Okay, make of this what you will. My Dad sent me an email the other day with the link to a website called Symphony of Science. I scrolled down, not really knowing what to look for other than a video featuring Carl Sagan and Bill Nye, the Science Guy (who we all know and love), as this is why my Dad sent the email. So before I even saw the Bill Nye video, I saw this one, clicked on it, and was instantly hypnotized by it. I was perplexed at the amount of layers to this thing. Who did this, is it a prank?, a spoof?, the real deal Bill McNeal? I will let you watch, and ponder these things for yourself. You might even want to go Symphony of Science and discover the glorious worlds that await. I would also like to note that the music in the music video you are about to watch is currently out on a special 7" vinyl, being distributed by none other than Jack White, over there at his amazing company, Third Man Productions. I would also like to note that I am not entirely in tune with the latest phenomenon on youtube, so this could be a real let down for some people, if you have already seen it. Last note: this music video was done by composer John Boswell. The statement on the site reads: The Symphony of Science is a musical project by John Boswell designed to deliver scientific knowledge and philosophy in musical form. Here you can watch music videos, download songs, read lyrics and find links relating to the messages conveyed by the music. For now, I'm staying baffled and more importantly, very moved, by this stirring piece of art. Enjoy the rest of your day.

This is a patch I designed for a friend of mine who is going through jet training for the air national guard down in Texas. I designed the original concept and sent it to him for feedback. The squadron it was for then decided to add a pilot with gas mask. After that I sent it to Jeremy who did it up nice and sharp in photoshop. He really gives things a professional look. After all that my jerk friend didn't even end up using it. Ah well.

Some Juxtaposition

Look at the size difference of these two!! AMAZING! I took these pictures on the Q54 bus going west on Metropolitan Ave. Sorry that pole is in the way.

What a walk! What an outfit! I think the juxtaposition of the above person's uber-manly walk and ultra-feminine dress is an amazing combination. Just as the large man and teeny tiny elderly woman work together, the dress and walk and attitude of the guy above work together, except with the guy above, it's all in the same physical body of movement. Opposites so close together just grab your attention right away. I was lucky to have my camera with me when I saw this person walking across Broadway on 36th St. For the record though, I never saw this person's face, so I'm not 100% positive if it's a guy or a girl. The chances of it being a woman are slim to none, but stranger things have been known to happen. I think that what really strikes me about this dude is that he is not dressed in typical gay attire. Rather, he has the look of a pre-teen girl. This might just be a new fashion trend within the gay community that I'm completely unaware of, and if that's the case, I wouldn't be surprised. I'm not making fun of this person in anyway or laughing at him, I really just enjoy the striking contrast in his style versus his walk.

3) You mention the DFW article you were reading before I even mentioned Infinite Jest.
4) The DFW article features ads for the Synecdoche, NY dvd.
5) Unrelated, I mention that (after finishing InfJest) I've begun reading "In the Skin of a Lion" by Michael Ondaatje (which my mom just happened to give me, apropos of nothing at all).
6) Ondaatje also wrote "The English Patient," as you mentioned, which I didn't know.
7) In the DFW interview with Charlie Rose, Wallace talks breifly about The English Patient and Ondaatje's poetry.

Interesting? Maybe. Maybe not. But true. This much I know.

Here's a picture I did with pencil, colored pencil, watercolor, acrylic, and gold leaf. Did you know the glue that one uses to apply gold leaf is called 'size'? Anyway, it's currently floating around Australia or the South Pacific somewhere, as I sent it to Jeremy quite a while ago and he still hasn't gotten it. It's Sam Rockwell playing Chuck Barris in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, based on the novel of the same name by Chuck Barris, screenplay by Charlie Kaufman, and directed by George Clooney. If you ever try to freeze frame the film you won't find this exact image because I took what I thought was Rockwell's most interesting pose from the scene and put it over The Gong Show's set. In the actual film he is doing this fist pump in front of a fairly non descript red curtain if I remember right. I wanted that glitter in there. Sorry for the crappy pics, I think you can see me in the glare. I really hope it gets to him OK eventually.

I'm missing a few of the kids photos that I used, but I tried to include the main photos I used as reference for the final. For each caricature I drew I used at least 5 photos as references. This one had a tight deadline and I had to pull a few all nighters, but all things considered I think it came out pretty well.

P.S. A prettier, nicer, and more sarcastic family, there could not be. If any Caldon checks this post and objects to having their pictures up, let me know and I'll take em down.

Here is, in order, a bird's footprint in a wooden plank, a profile in a stone wall, a crane from a dried leaf, the upper body of a muscular man in chipped paint (with arm raised, showing his left lateral muscles), and a seagull formed out of napkin on the edge of the bar. These images were all photographed with my low res cell phone camera as I found them, unaltered.

These are storyboards done for a script called Jeremy Orm is a Pervert by a really funny guy named Phil Johnston. There are a few things I would've liked to do a bit differently, but as with most projects, there was a pretty tight schedule and I did my best - probably doesn't do the script justice. I can't wait to see the movie. Watch for it in the next couple years, I'm sure it will be hilarious.

Seed Output While Scanning

Some might find this a little bit gross, but I think it looks nice. It's the output of my sunflower seed habit while I scanned in the animation for a little short story I'm working on. The first one is from 6/11 and the second from 6/12. You could say the first one is Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty on a smaller, seedier scale.

Fish and Bird Final

Here's the final version of the Fish and Bird piece I've been working on. There is a bit of shadow all over the place because I took the picture in the sun, which felt fitting for the drawing. I cut out the images with a regular old scissor then glued them onto a separate sheet of paper that I painted light blue with acrylic paint. Then I got some bakery string and yarn and attached the whale to the balloon.

I found this the other day looking in the junk drawer for my blockbuster card, which, by the way, I couldn't find. I don't like those junk drawers, but I find most people have them in their kitchens. Anyway, this woman struck me as being distinctly Canadian (or British-but thats the same thing really-all letters from my Canadian blog readers can be directed to my home address), so I guess I must have done it while I was in Toronto on the subway or bus going to school. The other reason I say that is because, well, its dated January 2007, and I happened to be in Toronto at that time.

I went to see Idiots and Angels the other day at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film itself was perhaps Plympton's best. It was as good or better than So I Married A Strange Person. I went with no expectations of him being there, so I was amazed when I saw him standing right by the entrance to the theater at the Village East. I couldn't get up enough courage to talk to him the first time I saw him, being that he's a huge animation hero of mine and one of the main reasons I started animating. But after getting into the theater and finding our seats, Lisa got up to go grab some Junior Mints. When she got back she said, 'You should really go talk to him, he's just standing there, looking a bit tense' (probably hoping people would respond well to his new feature). So after five minutes of psyching myself up, I went down and looked for him. He was busy when I passed him by, so I made a loop around the theater. Then, luckily enough, on the way back, he was standing alone. I went up to him, completely flustered, and was able to mutter some nonsense about me being a huge fan and having loved his films for years and years, about him actually responding to an email I sent him, how was I animating now for a living in a studio in Brooklyn, etc. I was so nervous the whole time, he probably thought I was some kind of crazy person. But he was so down to earth and really responsive to all the fans. At the end of the short discussion, he drew me this sketch and signed it! It was a very cool night and I was really happy to meet one of my inspirations, and even happier to find out he was such a nice guy. And thanks to Lisa for making me go to do it. I don't know if I would have if she wasn't there.

Lisa and I went to the New York Botanical Garden up in the Bronx on Sunday to see the Orchid Show. It was pretty intense, and most of the flowers and plant life there were spectacular, as you can see from some of the pictures below. I definitely recommend checking it out if you get a chance. And man, that place is huge!!

I hope that as soon as I post this Disney secret agents don't come and deport me to Mexico. Not that I have anything against Mexico, I'm sure it would be a nice change. I made fifteen million dollars on it and didn't get permission from anyone over there. I don't think they'll mind though. I did this for my friend's little girl, who is three. It's four feet by two and a half and I've since put a white border around it and the room was painted purple, so it looks pretty nice. There are a few things I want to change, but I won't point them out. Sorry about the flash. I took a few without it, but they, of course, were blurry. Ah well.

A snail was mugged by two turtles. When the police asked the snail what happened, he said "I don't remember, it all happened so fast."

Here' some progress on the album cover I've been working on. The main concepts are all specified by the client, I just put them down on paper in my own style (which in this case I borrowed heavily from the pin-up girls of the 40s and 50s). The colors are really a whole lot nicer in person, but I had to take a crappy picture with my digital camera. I need to get access to a larger scanner than I have (It's about 12" x 12"). I've painted some more detail since this was taken, but when the final version is ready, high res. image with the lettering and all, I'll be sure to post it.

Here's a product package I really wish i designed. It's from a fake mustache I got a few Halloweens ago. I was a male cow, so I wore a full cow costume and added a mustache. This post is to commemorate Jeremy's last day with a mustache, which he wore for the whole month of November. He's living in Australia and it's Movember there (Mo is the Australian slang for mustache). He and many other Australians were wearing the flavor savors to promote men's health.
